BDUM BDUM, BDUM BDUM,

Is the pattern your heart drums to,

As the sun relaxes, lulls into sleep, and the skies darken.

Yet, your senses suddenly heighten, and animal instincts kick in.

Ears perk up. Hairs are sticking up. Quickening heart rate.

The thuds of your heart echo through your ears and body,

Taking over the silence in the night.

Your neck cranes like prey searching for predator.

The accelerating metronome of your heart continues to beat,

But the melody doesn’t last for long.

You’re caught off guard.

Your vision is becoming spotty.

You—the prey—are being thrown around,

Clawed at, and beaten by The Apex Predator.

It feels like forever.

Once the beast takes everything from you:

Your body, your dignity, your future…

It finally leaves you alone on the ground,

Where your body awaits decomposition.

This is how an ecosystem works, right?

Predators hunt prey,

While the sun and moon swap places,

And the cycle repeats.
